What kind of salary can a copywriter expect from a permanent writing role?

copywriter salary

So, you love words and you’d like to become a copywriter.

But how much do copywriters make?

Well, for starters, the situation will be different depending on whether we’re talking about permanent copywriters or freelance copywriters.

I’ll cover freelance copywriting rates in another article, so let’s zone in on permanent roles:

What kind of salary can you expect to earn if you’re after a permanent copywriting job at an established business?

In short, what does a full-time copywriter in a proper job actually earn?

The answer is:

It varies.

At first glance, it would appear that copywriting salaries are all over the place. A quick look around all the job boards gives this impression. But actually, they’re more predictable than you might think.

You just need to know what differentiates one salary from another.

A copywriter’s salary will be dictated by 3 factors:

  • Skill level
  • Location
  • Industry

Let’s look at each factor one-by-one and showcase a few numbers.

Factor 1: Skill level

The amount of skill and experience you have will probably be the biggest influence on your wages. Now typically, permanent copywriters are lumped into 3 categories.

The entry level position is the junior copywriter.

What is a junior copywriter salary?

In the UK, junior copywriters earn between £20,000 and £25,000 a year. In the USA, the wage is an average salary of $44,180.

Next up is the mid-weight copywriter.

What is a mid-weight copywriter salary?

In the UK, mid-weight copywriters earn between £25,000 and £45,000 a year. In the USA, the wage is an average salary of $55,930.

Sitting proudly at the top of the tree is the senior copywriter.

What is a senior copywriter salary?

Technically speaking, there’s no cap on the amount you can earn if you’re an experienced copywriter. At the end of the day, the better you are, the more value you have.

However, research seems to show that there’s still a standard range.

In the UK, senior copywriters earn between £45,000 and £80,000. In the USA, the wage is an average salary of $64,390.

Factor 2: Location

Where the copywriting job is located will usually make a difference to the salary on offer.

As you can see from the above, copywriting salaries differ between the UK and the USA.

For the most part, UK copywriters earn less than their American counterparts, but it seems that experienced wordsmiths are perhaps rewarded more in the UK.

The relationship between the location of your permanent copywriter job and your salary goes beyond just talking about countries, too. When we talk about location affecting salaries, we can be pretty specific.

Clearly, you would earn more as a copywriter if you worked in London or New York that you would if your job was based in Coventry or Alabama.

Factor 3: Industry

Some industries require specialist copywriting skills. As a consequence, they’re quite naturally going to pay more.

For instance, medical copywriters often need particular experience.

As do technical copywriters, speechwriters, bid writers and suchlike. Equally, agency copywriters will be paid differently to in-house copywriters at a big corporation.

It’s time to shape your career.

It’s impossible to pin down exactly what a copywriter’s salary is. In reality, every company has different pay structures and there are always loads of variables at play.

However, we can draw some fairly safe conclusions from all the copywriting job advertisements out there.

If you’re thinking of becoming a copywriter and you’re eyeing up a permanent job, the figures I’ve mentioned above will give you a decent idea of what to expect.

Regardless of what writing credentials you have, don’t forget that your career is in your own hands. So long as you’ve got ambition and you improve your skills, you’ll be just fine.
